WTWKA Handbook

1. CODE OF CONDUCT

Where the Wild Kids Are has the following expectations:

  1. Where The Wild Kids Are (WTWKA) is intentional about being diverse and inclusive. We want everyone to feel welcome at each of our events regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, economic status and other diverse backgrounds.

The expectations for all participants in WTWKA activities are:

  1. DO NO HARM TO OTHERS. Do no harm to others includes, but is not limited to, refraining from: hitting, name-calling, teasing, bullying, lying, stealing, or other harmful instances as deemed by the leaders of WTWKA.
    1. It is imperative that we all work together to keep everyone in our community safe and healthy. If you or your child are sick, please refrain from coming to activities until fever or symptom-free for at least 24 hours.
  1. DO NO HARM TO YOURSELF. Do no harm to yourself includes, but is not limited to: disobeying safety guidelines, leaving the group area alone, or other harmful instances as deemed by the leaders of WTWKA.
  2. DO NO HARM TO THE WORLD. Do no harm to the world around you includes, but is not limited to: littering, destructive behavior which is damaging to property, or other harmful situations as deemed by the leaders of WTWKA.
  1. It is the responsibility of the parent or legal guardian to ensure that the child

is following all rules and instructions provided by WTWKA organizers, parents acting as volunteers, field trip venues, and their representatives. The parent and/or assigned responsible adult must be present and available during each meeting, unless the activity is specified as a drop-off activity. Parents must be reachable via phone call or text during drop-off activities.

2. FEES

A fee of $60 per student per semester (or a one time payment of $100 per year) is charged to cover the cost of supplies, insurance, and the Where the Wild Kids Are website throughout the semester. This fee may be paid via cash, paypal, venmo, or fundraising opportunities. There may be additional voluntary fundraising opportunities for special projects/events.

3. WEATHER

There is no such thing as bad weather.” There is such a thing as unsafe weather. There are some weather situations which may not allow us to meet outside or may prevent us from meeting at all. If there is inclement weather, please check the Facebook page. At the end of the day, we want you and your children to be safe!

  1. In the event of thunderstorms in which lighting is within 15 miles, we will post an alternative meeting location or the postpone meeting time.
  2. In the event of inclement weather such as potential for tornados, severe winds, or icy conditions which make driving to our location unsafe we will cancel that day’s

meeting.

4. TECHNOLOGY & PHOTOS

Students’ technology items (such as phones, tablets, etc) should be on silent and put away during our meeting unless it is a part of the lesson/activity. Weeks where tech is needed will be communicated in advance. Students may not post photos or videos containing any other WTWKA students or teachers on their personal social media accounts.

Each family completes a photo release form with registration. Please be mindful that not every family is comfortable with their children’s photos being posted online. If you choose to post a photo that contains another child’s face, please ask the parent or cover up the child’s face with a sticker, emoji, etc.

***Please make your personal family photo rules very clear to your tweens/teens. Ex: if you do not want them photographed, they need to know to step out of group pictures or remind other students that they are not to be photographed. Thank you!

5. COMMUNICATION

Over the course of the year, there will be a lot of communication between WTWKA leaders and parents. This communication will happen in one of three ways: the private Facebook group via posts with the @everyone tag, the GroupMe, and email. The private Facebook group and GroupMe will be utilized on a weekly basis for reminders of group meetings and/or activities. Email will be utilized for communication regarding field trips and/or information on an individual basis. General information, upcoming field trips, ideas for activities at home, and more can be found on our website wtwka.com.

6. SAFETY

As the world around us continues to evolve, so does WTWKA. The safety of your families is the utmost priority of group leaders. To ensure the safety of all during WTWKA activities, steps are taken to mitigate risk factors. WTWKA will background check group leaders every 3 years. Background checks are not required for parents. At least one group leader at each meeting will be CPR/First Aid Trained.
